Anastrozole is used to treat breast cancer in women who have gone through "the change of life" (menopause). Anastrozole works by lowering estrogen hormone levels to help shrink tumors and slow their growth.
Anastrozole is prescribed for hormone receptor-positive, early breast cancer in postmenopausal women as adjuvant treatment ( treatment following surgery with or without radiation ). Anastrozole is prescribed as a first-line treatment for hormone receptor-positive or hormone receptor unknown, locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer in postmenopausal women. Anastrozole is also prescribed for the treatment of advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women with disease progression following treatment with tamoxifen.Anastrozole should not be used with tamoxifen because tamoxifen can reduce anastrozole levels in the body and decrease its therapeutic effects.
Anastrozole is an aromatase inhibitor, an anti-cancer medication use for the adjuvant or initial treatment of breast cancer in post-menopausal women. Estrogen causes or increases growth of certain breast cancers. Anastrozole works by blocking aromatase enzyme, which is involved in estrogen production in the body. This leads to decreased tumor size or delayed progression of tumor growth in some women. The FDA approved brand name anastrozole (Arimidex) in 1995.
The recommended dose of anastrozole is one tablet (1 mg) by mouth once daily.
Hormones are substances produced naturally in the body. They act as chemical messengers and help control the activity of cells and organs. Hormonal therapies interfere with the way hormones are made or how they work in the body. Many breast cancers rely on the hormone oestrogen to grow. This type of breast cancer is called oestrogen receptor-positive (ER positive) breast cancer.
After the menopause, oestrogen is no longer made in the ovaries. Instead, it’s made in the fatty tissues of the body. This happens when an enzyme called aromatase changes other hormones into oestrogen. Anastrozole is a drug called an aromatase inhibitor. It blocks this process and reduces the amount of oestrogen in the body.
When a man uses anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS), certain compounds will aromatize into estrogen. The main culprits that will do this are all testosterone esters, such as: cypionate, enanthate,dianabol, deca durabolin, and less so Boldenone (EQ). If estrogen isn't inhibited by using an AI (aromatase inhibitor), then high-estrogen side effects can occur. The most well-known side effect isgynecomastia or what is known commonly as 'gyno', 'bitch tits' or 'man breasts'. A man may notice a lump forming within his breast(s) - or under the nipple area; if not treated quickly, this can require serious surgery to remove. The lesser known but very serious side effects are caused by water retention, which can give a bloated or 'full' look.

Internally, carrying around extra water weight will strain the body’s lipids across the board. A person can expect a rise in blood pressure, heart strain, and loss in energy. Also, high estrogen can affect libido.
On the other hand, if you are too aggressive in inhibiting estrogen, by using compounds that are harsher than Arimidex, this can cause your estrogen to drop too low. As a result, you can expect erectile disfunction (ED), loss of energy, depression and low libido.
Although Arimidex does increase testosterone levels slightly in the body, it is more often used in conjunction with other steroids to lower estrogen in the body. Many anabolic steroids will convert, or aromatize, in the body into estrogen, which causes many of the unwanted side effects like bloating and acne. Arimidex is one of the best compounds to lower the aromatizing effect of steroids.
As to female. Many breast cancers are stimulated to grow by the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone. These breast cancers can be treated with drugs that block the effects of these hormones. Arimidex blocks the process of aromatisation. So it lowers the amount of oestrogen in the body. In advanced breast cancer the cancer cells may grow more slowly or stop growing completely.
As to male. Anastrozole may also be a part of treatment for men suffering from prostate cancer. In rare cases when a male patient has breast cancer, anastrozole may also be a treatment option. It is also a good choice for the treatment of men hair loss.
As to bodybuilders. Another use of Anastrozole for men is to maintain a powerfully-built and bulky physique among bodybuilders, especially those who take anabolic steroids.
